DEVONthink Example Databases

Though DEVONthink is generally an easy-to-use application, there are some tasks that can be quite complex. This is why we have created some example databases that you can download and use right away; databases that will take advantage of advanced feature sets and help you learn more about this powerful application. Modify these databases to suit your needs, and fill them with your own data — they’re yours to experiment with. And, if you have built your own database that you would like to share with us and other users, please contact us and let us know!

(Note: All example databases require DEVONthink Professional. They are not designed to work with DEVONthink Personal).

Office Productivity

Paperless Office Database (4.3 MB)

Use DEVONthink Professional as the hub for your 'paperless office.' This example database integrates emails (taken from your email application), PDFs, clips from webpages or other applications, as well as links to (or archives of) interesting and important web pages.. Store all your documents in one place, regardless of where they come from.

Email Archive Database (3.7 MB)

Overwhelmed by the daily email flood? Tame it! DEVONthink Professional comes with scripts for all major email applications, including Apple Mail, Microsoft Entourage, Eudora, Mailsmith, and PowerMail, as well as many different news readers (such as NetNewsWire and Endo). This database is an example on how to use DEVONthink Professional as an email archive.

To-Do List Database (3.6 MB)

Get organized! Download this simple set-up for using DEVONthink Professional as a to-do manager (roughly based on David Allen’s "Getting Things Done®" concept). Organize all the things you want or need to do, and categorize them accordingly. Then, file the digital materials you need to accomplish the categorized tasks in one, simple-to-use database.

Research and Project Management

Research Archive Database (8.7 MB)

Use DEVONthink Professional to collect and organize your research data from the web and other sources. This example database integrates both clipped contents and live links to websites, demonstrating DEVONthink Professional's ability to mix and display local and remote content side by side. You can even publish you research materials to the web (see below).

Project Management Database (4.1 MB)

Project management involves a complex web of tasks, deadlines, documents, and contacts. This example shows how to use DEVONthink Professional for simple project management. DEVONthink's capability to store any file type makes it the ideal place to keep everything that belongs to one project together: Contacts, documents, email correspondence, PDFs, news clippings, links to websites, newsfeeds, schedules, and more.

General Purpose

DEVONthink Professional isn't only for high-end tasks such as research or project management. You can even use it as a simple notepad (with high-end features, of course) This example integrates both clipped contents and live links to websites, as well as demonstrates the various, comfortable ways to enter new notes.

Images Database (8.3 MB)

Use DEVONthink Professional as a simple image and multimedia archive. DEVONthink Professional supports all image formats that Mac OS X and the Quartz engine understand, as well as all QuickTime formats, including, but not limited to, MP3s, AAC audio files, Flash animations, and movies.

Don't keep your knowledge for yourself — share it! This database shows how you use DEVONthink for organizing your notes and stored knowledge in a cross-referenced network of documents, and then how to publish it as a website (either on the web or on the Intranet using Mac OS X's built-in web sharing).
